If you use an inhaler to treat your asthma, then you are well aware of the transition currently underway from the “old school” CFC type inhaler to the new HFA-type inhalers. Those initials stand simply for the chemical that helps propel the mist from your inhaler canister into your airways.

The new inhalers taste and feel very different from the ones we are used to. And quite a few users have not felt that they get the same level of relief from the new inhalers. So, naturally, this has raised quite a bit of concern that the HFA inhalers are not as effective as their older counterparts.

What are the facts?

Well – here are a few to consider:

  • The HFA propellants produce smaller particles of medication which are actually better absorbed into the airways.
  • The effectiveness of your medicine is largely dependent on how well you use the inhaler.
  • HFA inhalers have all passed rigorous FDA testing for effectiveness.
  • If you’re not getting the relief you need, then it’s time to talk with your doctor.
