Should we consider banning peanuts from schools given the risk of exposure, and possibly life-threatening symptoms as a result, to children with peanut allergy? This is clearly a controversial topic, and would lead to other questions, such as banning other foods, who could/should be held responsible for enforcing such a ban, as well as implications of governmental control and the rights of non-peanut-allergic children to eat lunches containing peanuts. What are your thoughts?

One Response for "Peanut Allergy: Should Peanuts Be Banned From Schools?"
I think they should be banned. Not for my daughter only though, her allergy is mild in comparison to others. There is a child in our school that has airborne allergy and can react to being in the same room as peanuts or peanut butter. She has actually reacted in a grocery store when someone opened a container of peanuts for a snack. Many children have severe allergies, and so many more can have severe reactions and the parents are not always aware. There is a mother I know that said her child could have a possibly contaminated item because she knew the hospital was only 2 miles away. That may be to far. If it can prevent one life threatening reaction to remove it from the school than it should be done.
I have been told by other parents that its the only thing there child will eat. Now there are so many other products that taste the same, that they all have a replacement for the PB&J at school.
