Passion Fruit Powder: New Asthma Treatment?

New research suggests that a flavonoid-rich extract from purple passion fruit may be an asthma treatment, according to foodnavigator-usa.com.

In a study published in Nutrition Research, passion fruit peel (PFP) extract significantly reduced wheezing and coughing among asthmatics. Coughing was reduced by 76.2% and wheezing was reduced by 80.9%. No adverse affects were reported.

Researchers conclude, “”The results of the present study demonstrated the clinical benefit of daily oral administration of PFP in adults with persistent asthma, with safe use. As many patients are not able to tolerate the currently available anti-asthmatic medications, a natural dietary supplement with low or no toxicity would be an attractive candidate for further development.”
