Many people with allergies think that they’ve used all of the allergy medicines available. Often, however, when I see a new patient in my allergy clinic, I am able to prescribe a medication that a person has not used — and many times these new medicines result in better symptom relief. This may be through the use of a single medicine, a combination of medicines, or a “symptom-focused” medicine that targets a person’s worst allergy symptom.
While any physician can prescribe these little-used allergy medicines, an allergist is specifically trained to recognize, diagnose and better treat people with allergy symptoms. Allergists are also trained to treat people with allergy shots, the only potential cure for allergy symptoms.
