Asthma Increases Risk of Suicide

WebMD reports that new research shows that people who suffer from asthma are 50% more likely to attempt suicide.

“Smoking and mental health illnesses like depression, panic disorder, and alcohol abuse were all associated with an increased risk for suicide [in the study], but when we controlled for these things the link with asthma was still there,” says researcher Diane E. Clarke. The study appars in the May issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

While researchers cannot explain the link between asthma and suicide, Dr. Richard Nicklas, MD, of George Washington Medical Center explains, “What has been shown in studies is that there is a decrease in cognitive function – with more fatigue, irritability and difficulty concentrating – among patients experiencing [allergy and asthma] symptoms. Whether this is associated with something as serious as suicide, though, is the question.”

Other studies have found a link between seasonal allergies and suicide rates.

If you have allergies or asthma, don’t let these studies frighten you! If you’re feeling blue because of your allergies or asthma, take control of your health as well as your mental health.

Environmental control will help you avoid the allergens that make you sick. An air purifier in your bedroom, for instance, can make a world of difference in your quality of sleep and your quality of life.
