The AAFA has just released this year’s Asthma Capitals. This isn’t an award really… if your city appears in these rankings, it means you live in a place that presents numerous challenges to asthma control for its residents. This year, Knoxville, Tennessee tops the rankings — for the 3rd time in 5 years!

Looks like those of you who live in the rolling foothills of the Smoky Mountains don’t have it all good. Knoxville got “knocked” for having high pollen counts, high levels of air pollution, not enough “smoke free” public areas and heavy use of quick-relief inhalers.

AAFA officials do emphasize that these rankings should not be used as a reason to move. Asthma triggers and irritants can be found everywhere. What’s important is that you campaign in your area for better air quality and smoking bans, and work with your doctor to develop an asthma management plan that keeps your asthma under control.

However, I have to say I’m happy that, even though my city (Boise) ranks in the top 100 in the nation, at least they’re way down at 90. Where do you rank?
