Scientists recently announced that they are getting closer to developing a new type of asthma / allergy medicine that would target the underlying cause of a hyperreactive immune system, rather than asthma symptoms. It seems these new drugs would shut down a specific protein called p110delta that triggers allergic reactions. And they could do it without shutting down the entire immune system, which helps protect us from infection and other health threats.

Scientists have now proved the existence and role of this protein in mice, which is a first step in getting pharmaceutical companies to pour dollars into research involving targeting this protein. And apparently there are already a number of companies expressing interest in this research.

Most current asthma medicines target asthma symptoms. A medication that targets the real causes of asthma would revolutionize asthma management approaches. However, it is likely going to be years before we actually have access to such drugs. Still, it’s exciting to think that such progressive treatments may be seen in our lifetimes!
